“Sulamot” Project
Sulamot, a joint project of the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO) and Migdal Ohr, focuses on teaching approximately 40 students each year how to play classical wind instruments and perform in the school’s orchestra.
Founded in 2010, by American Friends of Migdal Ohr Board Member, Jerry Seligsohn, Sulamot was created to bring music education to
Israel’s neediest children and enhance their artistic development. At the IPO and Migdal Ohr, music is seen as a way of promoting change by encouraging such values as team work, responsibility, mutual respect, cooperation, tolerance, and strengthening self-confidence.
Made up of 5th and 6th graders from the Machshava Elementary School, students who participate in this unique programme practice daily and have lessons taught both privately and in small groups throughout the week. The orchestra consists of flutes, clarinets, oboes, alto and tenor saxophones, trumpets, trombones, tubas, French and baritone horns, as well as various percussion instruments.
Each year, children participating in the Sulamot Ohr Channa Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra Project perform in front of a live audience as part of the school’s end of the year performance. They also get to perform in a unique concert in Tel Aviv that is dedicated to schools participating in similar programmes. In 2013, three girls from the 6th grade competed in the first ever Ruth Lewis International Clarinet Competition in Tel Aviv and took home the 3rd prize!
